Creating a Safe Space for your Child to Ask Questions using Cardology

Updated: Jul 3, 2022

Imagine being a tiny human. Every single day you are a little confused and very curious about everything happening around you. You have so many questions that all the grown-ups seem to know but you can't figure out. That sounds pretty overwhelming, right? This is why safe spaces are essential for our children.

In 2017, Dr. Sam Wass, a British researcher, polled over 1,500 parents and learned that children ask 73 questions on average every single day (www.studyfinds.org). This survey also showed us the top 10 questions asked by children:

1. Why do people die? 2. Where did I come from? 3. What is God? 4. How was I made? 5. What does “we can’t afford it” mean? 6. Is Father Christmas (Santa Claus) real? 7. Why do I have to go to school? 8. When you die who will I live with? 9. Why is the sky blue? 10. Why can’t I stay up as late as you?

Now imagine if you were the one asking the questions. Where was your mind before even summoning the courage to open your mouth?

This is why children need a safe space to ask questions. We never know where the answers to these questions will take them. It’s important to be as prepared as we can for their sanity (and ours).

How To Create “Ask Me Anything” Time

Step 1: I would recommend setting aside a time every day where your child can ask you any question that they want. Remember, Dr. Wass’ study showed us just how many questions our kids want to ask us every day. So, setting aside 10 minutes every day within a safe place to do so seems only fair. Right?

Step 2: Review the chart below to find your child’s birth card. This is the card that details the personalities and gifts of your child. Look for your child’s birth date and birth month. For example, my birthday is February 19th so my birth card is a 6 of Diamonds.

Step 3: What is the suit of your child’s birthday; are they a Heart, Club, Diamond, or Spade? Now look below to determine the environment that your child thrives best in.

- Hearts: Social and Relaxed

- Clubs: Social and Energetic

- Diamonds: Isolated and Relaxed

- Spades: Isolated and Energetic

Step 4: Now is the time to study your child and create the space for them that they need!

- My Queen of Hearts son loves to take a bath with his baby brother. He’s not alone and everyone is relaxed.

- My 7 of Clubs son loves tickle parties. Tons of energy is being transferred between me, his father, and his brothers.

- My 8 of Diamonds son wants me all to himself. He won’t go to sleep when his brothers go to sleep; he only goes to sleep when he has me alone. This is when he gives me the most smiles.

- One of my best friends is an Ace of Spades. She loves to be by herself but she is always doing something; playing games, watching TV, cooking, crafting etc.

Step 5: Study yourself as well. What is your birth card? How could you create a safe place for yourself when you need time to reflect or chat with those close to you?
